Community news: Lagoa area connected to car-free route
The route aims to connect Sagres Fortress to Vila Real de Santo António at the border with Spain with an ecological corridor where motor vehicles are banned, except when the path crosses urban areas with low rates of traffic.
Along its 214 kilometres, the Ecovia do Algarve crosses 12 of the region’s 16 districts and includes pavements and land paths. The signs can be horizontal and vertical, the blue lines only being used in paved areas.
Across Lagoa, the route includes urban and rural areas. The path goes from Ferragudo, near the old bridge in the western side of the district, to Armação de Pêra.
Along the way, visitors are informed about the special monuments and places of interest like the Senhora da Rocha or Sítio das Fontes.
The Ecovia do Algarve project is part of a larger ecological corridor that is being built by the European Cyclist’s Federation (ECF) in the European continent, named EuroVelo.
The Algarve route is the EuroVelo 1 and, in total, there are 12 other routes covering 63,505 kilometres.
